Fume Extractor with 3D Printed Case, Carbon Filter and 70mm (or any) Fan
This project is a DIY fume extractor designed to keep your soldering area safe and clean.
Features:
- 3D Printed Case – lightweight, durable, and customizable.
- Carbon Filter – cut to fit, removes smoke and harmful particles.
- 70×70mm Fan – provides strong airflow.(Or any other DC fan, the case is customizable)
- 12V DC Jack – simple to power with any 12V adapter. (or 24v)
Quick Assembly – solder the wires, insert the filter, and you’re ready.
How to get the carbon filter:
- The filter is a standard activated carbon sheet (commonly used in air purifiers, cooker hoods, aquarium filters, or fume masks).
- They are widely available online (Amazon, eBay, AliExpress) or in hardware stores.
- Look for sheets around 2–5 mm thick — they are easy to cut with scissors.
How to make and install it:
- Print the case using any standard 3D printer and filament or use PCBWAY 3D Printing services (PLA or PETG recommended).
- Buy an activated carbon sheet and cut it to the size of the fan opening (70×70mm).
- Place the filter inside the printed housing so that the fan pulls air through the filter.
- Secure the filter with a simple press-fit, tape, or a printed cover.
- Solder the wires to the DC jack, connect a 12V power source, and test the airflow.
Why use it?
- When soldering, smoke and fumes can be harmful if inhaled. This extractor captures those fumes in the carbon filter and blows out clean air, making soldering safer and more comfortable.
Applications:
- Soldering stations
- Home Electronics workshops
- Makerspaces
This fume extractor is cheap, easy to build, and highly effective — a perfect addition to any electronics workspace.
- If you have any questions or want the STL and all the files ask in the comments. I can even scale it for your fan or needs.
Warning:
This DIY fume extractor is a basic hobby project. While it reduces soldering fumes with an activated carbon filter, it is not a certified air purifier.
Do not rely on it in industrial, medical, or professional environments where certified fume extraction is required.
Always use it in a well-ventilated area to further reduce exposure.
Carbon filters lose effectiveness over time — replace the filter regularly to maintain performance.
The unit operates at 12V DC. Double-check all wiring and solder joints to avoid shorts or overheating.
Keep away from liquids and heat sources.
This project is meant as an assistive tool for hobbyists, not a substitute for professional-grade fume extraction systems.
