Adjustable 3.7V Step-Up Boost Converter (5V–30V)
This project presents a compact and efficient step-up boost converter designed to generate higher voltages from a single 3.7V lithium battery, making it an excellent solution for portable and battery-powered electronics. Built around the B628 high-frequency oscillator IC, the circuit demonstrates how a minimal set of components can deliver a wide and adjustable output range from 5V all the way up to 30V.
The design begins with a simple yet effective boost topology optimized for high-frequency switching. By carefully selecting the inductor, diode, and feedback network, the converter achieves stable voltage regulation while maintaining a very small PCB footprint. The adjustable output allows the same board to be used across multiple voltage requirements such as 5V, 7V, 9V, 12V, 24V, and even 30V, making it highly versatile for experimentation and real-world use.
Assembly is straightforward and beginner-friendly, with hand-soldered SMD components placed according to the schematic. Despite its small size, the board is capable of delivering up to 2A of output currnte, depending on the voltage level and load conditions. This makes it suitable not just for logic-level electronics, but also for powering higher-voltage modules and LED loads.
Performance testing highlights the strength of the design. Powered by a single 3.7V lithium cell, the boost converter successfully drives a 12V LED module, maintaining stable brightness and output voltage. The test is then extended further by powering two 12V LED modules in series at 24V, clearly demonstrating the converter’s efficiency and reliability under load. Voltage stability during these tests shows that the feedback and switching design are well balanced.
Thanks to its wide output range, compact size, and efficient operation, this boost converter is ideal for applications such as portable LED drivers, DIY power banks, embedded systems, test equipment, and battery-powered prototypes where higher voltages are required from a single-cell source. It also serves as an excellent learning project for understanding boost converter fundamentals, high-frequency switching, and power management design.
Overall, this 3.7V adjustable boost converter proves that powerful and flexible power solutions don’t have to be large or complex. With thoughtful design and careful component selection, it delivers impressive performance in a tiny form factor, making it a valuable addition to any maker’s power electronics toolkit.
