UNI-SAT: Nanosatellite Flight Hardware for CubeDesign

WHO I AM My name is Juan Salvador Palacios Bett, a Mechatronics Engineering graduate from UNI and the Team Leader of the UNI-SAT aerospace research group. Alongside a multidisciplinary team of Telecommunications and Aerospace engineers, we specialize in embedded systems, complex Altium Designer routing, and integrating advanced instrumentation. Our main focus right now is testing our hardware at the CubeDesign competition in Argentina, presenting our findings at international congresses, and competing globally, including our upcoming application for an event in China.

Project description Developing flight hardware is a massive engineering challenge. Our nanosatellite consists of multiple critical subsystems, designed entirely by our team:

OBC & Processing: Features advanced STM32H743 MCUs running at 200 MHz, QSPI flash storage, and strict impedance routing.

EPS (Electrical Power System): Manages energy harvesting from solar panels (MPPT) and active thermal control using Kapton heaters.

ADCS (Attitude Determination and Control): Incorporates magnetorquers, RM3100 magnetometers, and BMI088 IMUs.

COM1 & COM2 (Communications): Features UHF and S-Band modules. These boards require precise 50-ohm grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW) routing, impedance control, and RF shielding.

Payloads: Includes a highly sensitive ADS-B receiver with a −94 dBm threshold, and an optical payload requiring SPI communication at 8 MHz.

Mechanisms: Custom deployment boards utilizing thermal resistors to cut Dyneema retention wires.

Manufacturing Needs: To ensure survival during our upcoming tests for the CubeDesign competition, we require highly reliable manufacturing. Our designs demand standard 4-layer PCBs, impedance control, precise SMT stencils, and advanced RF materials.
