Summary: Using Inspection Tools When Designing PC Boards.
When designing PC boards in KiCad (or similar software), always use the Electrical Rules Checker for schematics and the Design Rules Checker for board layouts. Run the Electrical Rules Checker before starting your board layout to ensure there are no schematic errors; some, like “Label not connected to anything,” can be safely ignored if they’re only notes. Before routing—either manually or with autoroute—run the Design Rules Checker; if only Unconnected Items are flagged, you can proceed with routing.
If your PCB is being assembled by PCBWay or another manufacturer, utilize the measurement tool to verify that the dimensions of component footprints match the technical specifications of the parts you intend to use. For self-assembly, in addition to measuring tools, print the PCB layout at a 1:1 scale on paper and compare the footprints directly with your components to ensure compatibility. The 3D viewer is also valuable for confirming the correct orientation of components prior to assembly.
