WS2812B LED Graduation Cap PCB!

Hello! My name is Steven Comandini. I am a senior Electrical Engineering student at Bradley University in Peoria, IL, USA. I am set to graduate in May of 2023!

My project is a custom PCB that will be placed on top of my mortarboard/graduation cap. Every graduating senior is allowed to decorate their hat and showcase their designs during the commencement ceremony! A PCB would make an excellent cap design considering my major is in Electrical Engineering. The following sections will further explain the design of the PCB.

Software:

All the schematic and PCB designing was done in Altium Designer. Fusion360 was also used to validate PCB sizing.

Schematic:

The image below is the schematic of my design. The inputs are a 2-pin JST connector to allow the board to be battery-powered and a USB C connector for charging the battery. The lipo battery will be charged using the BQ2407 IC. This then outputs to the TPS61230A which is a 5v boost-up IC. The 5 volts will power both the ATtiny85 microcontroller and the 98 WS2812B mini LEDs on the board!

PCB Layout:

The entire PCB is the size of my graduation cap. The center cut-out is to make room for the cap's button and tassel. The rectangular cut-out will house an 8000mAh single-cell lipo battery. The silkscreen text on the left and right is information about me and information about the board respectfully. The giant 'B' silkscreen design is of my school's logo. Unlike the 3D model shown, the final board will have a white silkscreen with a black solder mask (to match my graduation cap).

BQ2407:

This is a close-up of the routing of the charger IC on the board.

TPS61230A:

This is a close-up of the routing of the 5v boost-up IC on the board.

ATtiny85 & WS2812B:

This is a close-up of the routing of the 98 WS2812B LEDs with the ATtiny microcontroller. The LEDs are arranged to create my school's logo!

To PCBWay:

Such a large high-quality PCB design proves to be costly. I am confident that your services would be a great match when it comes to manufacturing this board. Any support from PCBway on this project would be most appreciated :-)

Best,

Steven Comandini
