UMSAE Forumla Electric Racecar

Team Description:

UMSAE Polar Bear Racing Electric is the youngest team of the UMSAE organization. Polar Bear Racing designs an open wheel electric formula style race car each school year to compete in internationally renowned competitions around the world hosted by SAE International and it's associates. This provides students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and take their skills to the next level. The unique challenges of designing an electric vehicle require the skills of a variety of engineering disciplines including mechanical, electrical and computer engineering.

Project Description:

Our electrical systems have 6 PCBs that have just finished the design phase and are ready for manufacturing.

  1. Auxiliary Control Board: This PCB contains an STM32 microcontroller to control the auxiliary function of the car, particular those that are related to our 300V accumulator. This board also contains electronics to detect faults causing the accumulator to disconnect from the rest of the car.

  2. Vehicle Control Board: This PCB also contains an STM32 microcontroller to control the vehicle functions of the car, such as talking to the motor controller.

  3. Steering Wheel Board: This is a new PCB we added in this year to fit on the face of our steering wheel to display the power draw, battery capacity, and warning LEDs.

  4. HV Board: This PCB pre-charges the car side so the accumulator can be connected to the rest of the vehicle with limited inrush currents. It also discharges the car side when the accumulator is disconnected.

  5. HV Fuse Board: This PCB contains fuses that are required by SAE rules.

  6. TSAL PCB: TSAL stands for Tractive System Active Light. This light blinks red when the accumulator is live and lights up green when the accumulator is disconnected. This light is required by SAE rules and also lets bystanders know if the car is safe to approach.

  7. LV Power PCB: This PCB manages and distributes our low voltage power for the vehicle.

Sponsorship Request:

I've printed PCB with PCBWay last year and was very happy with the printed boards and would love to enter in a sponsorship partnership with PCBWay. Sponsoring our team would be mutually beneficial for our team and yours. With your sponsorship, we would place a logo on our vehicle. PCBWay would gain exposure to the students at the University of Manitoba as well as the other students and industry sponsors at all 5 of our international competitions.
