Team Hermes

Team Hermes - STEM RACING (F1 IN SCHOOLS) TEAM

About the team

Team Hermes is an Entry Level team competing in the international competition STEM Racing, formerly known as Formula 1 in Schools. Team Hermes was formed by 4 KS4 students studying in Gems Founders Al Mizhar as a way of engaging in engineering, collaboration and innovation through the development of a miniature F1-like car.

Team Hermes symbolizes speed, accuracy, wisdom, and innovation. We drew inspiration from the mythological messenger Hermes, who was known for being agile and wearing shoes with wings. Therefore, our team represents swift movement and efficient performance. Our primary aim was to design a car that is swift, aerodynamic, and optimally engineered to be efficient during its race yet we had many other aims to improve our work.

Team Hermes works in various fields, including CAD car designing, marketing, sponsorship, sustainability, portfolio development, and public speaking skills. In addition, We understand the importance of qualities, such as collaboration, persistence, integrity, and accuracy, along with incorporating all 17 UN SDGS in our work, including reducing the use of paper through online work and material recycling throughout the process to writing studies and organizing a beach clean.

Why we made it

Team Hermes was an opportunity to explore engineering and a way to collaborate with peers in a competitive environment. By participating in STEM Racing, our team members learned practical skills in engineering, branding and management while also learning how to work under pressure. Team Hermes wasn’t created just to compete but also to push its members to critically think, solve problems effectively and to gain an experience similar to that of a real Formula 1 team.

Furthermore, above the competition, it helped us realize the importance of management as well as why and how we should take care of our planet. We believe that STEM Racing is an event that helps you understand how businesses work, through sponsors and collaboration we aim to create something unique and fast that changes the world.

Initial Ideas:

Our initial ideas focused on creating a car that balanced aerodynamic efficiency with stability. Looking at past models, we pieced together what a racing car needed and learnt how it helped to better understand how to improve. Early concepts focused on different nose shapes and sizes, side pod placement and wheel positioning to optimize laminar flow to decrease turbulence. We researched planes and race cars to understand the base shape as well as how a back wing should look. Simultaneously, we also worked on structure and strength; something with weak attachments could easily break from the sudden force of acceleration or while being caught at the end.

Engineering:

Our team used The approach to engineering was based on the idea that it is all about innovation, trials, and gradual improvement, during which our dedicated team managed to create four significant car models. The car engineer worked hard, using CAD software to come up with designs. Afterwards, the rest of our members would examine all prototypes, identify their weaknesses, and work on improvements to turn our original concepts into advanced designs.

Every prototype served as a new stage for us to learn more about aerodynamics, distance between parts and overall movement. It was interesting to work in such a way as we were able to practice engineering in a way professionals do and take back from the experience.

Currently our team is dedicating itself to designing our final car, which we will submit

for manufacturing.

Our team used softwares like CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to test the 3D model of the car. Afterwards, we’d analyze performance as well as aerodynamics from CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to understand what went well and what didn’t. Through a process of trial and error, while making sure we were actually researching before creating new models, we aimed to design a car that both fits the regulations and is efficient.

Competition Video:

We have qualified but we have yet to participate in the competition, however this video can help explain the competitions flow

Why do we need you:

As a student team, we need to manage costs and also have representation. Our resource manager has worked hard to create a finance management chart along with a table of a range of prices. Support from PCBWay would allow us to have a strong partnership, something we value more than just money.

What you receive back:

If you decide to partner with us, we can represent your brand logo on our portfolios as well as our final physical car. This event will be live-streamed to multiple schools across The UAE, meaning that your company will gain serious recognition from children and teachers across the education system.

Lastly, thank you for taking out time to communicate with us and review our work throughout these past few days. We truly appreciate your support and feedback as it has motivated us to work harder and continue improving.
