TRIDENT 3 - MATE ROV

This is the Rancho San Juan High School's take on a MATE ROV! We are CTRL - SEA Robotics, a company based out of Rancho San Juan High and our ROV is called the Trident 3. We compete at the MATE ROV Competition in Monterey, California and hope to attend the world competition at some point in the duration of our time at Rancho. Thank you to PCB WAY for the sponsorship! They will be making our Side Panels with their sheet metal service, or the claw with the CNC, or both!

These are the side panels for the ROV. They will be cut out of 5 millimeter aluminium and include motor mounts, claw mounts, and other areas for tool attachment. Some other notable features include a "Viewing window" so you can see the internal electronics enclosure that also, in turn, helps with water flow / hydrodynamics. The 3D Printed parts of the frame will also attach to it using M4 screws. We chose aluminium because it is lightweight, cheap, and very rigid. This will insure little to no flex from the power of the motors.

More on the ROV:

The ROV will be used in the MATE ROV Regional in Monterey Bay, California. We hope to complete real world tasks to show what our ROV can do in real world settings, but to also do good in the competition. We also hope to go to the World Competition at some point in our high school years.

ROV Specifications:

The ROV is designed to run on 12 volt power from a control station on the surface of the pool. Because of the MATE ROV Regulations, it must draw less than 25 amps total, leading us to limit power to the thrusters. Control is handled over Ethernet between two raspberry pi's, one of which is connected to a Navigator Flight Controller in our sub-sea container. Control signals from an Xbox controller are sent via Ethernet to be converted to PWM through the Navigator for PWM to the motors. The Subsea pi also sends USB Camera feeds to the surface for easy viewing.

Claw / Manipulators:

Our Water Proof servo claw will be used to grab bigger; heavier objects while underwater. It is a parallel gripper driven by a rack and pinion. This will give us up to 40 KG's of gripping force for a tight underwater grip. We may even end up getting it CNC'ed by PCB WAY in aluminium.
