Safe Stride

We are a team of 5 who have been working on various robotics projects for some time now and have great expertise in various fields.

Recently, we decided to create a school project that would help the visually-impaired in their daily routine.

SafeStride is a shoe-mounted smart navigation device designed to help visually impaired individuals move safely and independently. Our goal is to create a hands-free, affordable, and accurate mobility solution using modern sensing and navigation technologies.

Through interviews with visually impaired individuals, we learned that existing solutions are often bulky, expensive, or difficult to use in crowded outdoor environments.

Haptic Navigation: Vibration motors instruct the user where to go
Custom low-cost and small lidar created using a flat PCB motor and VL53L4CX ToF sensor.
Upward-facing ToF for obstacles like tables
ESP32-S3 + Micro-ROS Integration: Sends real-time data to ROS 2 (Nav2 + SLAM Toolbox)
Smartphone App (Flutter) — Navigation, step tracking, appointment-based routes, settings, emergency contacts
VoiceOver-supported interface for blind users
