What is Formula SAE?

Formula SAE (FSAE) has been an annual competition since 1981, where collegiate teams design, build, and test small race cars. It challenges students to apply engineering principles in vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, and manufacturing. Teams are judged on performance, cost analysis, and design innovation, providing a valuable hands-on experience that helps students develop technical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, preparing them for careers in the automotive and engineering industries.

Who is Red Raider Racing?

Red Raider Racing is a student-led organization at Texas Tech University that participates in the prestigious Formula SAE (FSAE) competition. Our team consists of passionate students from a wide range of disciplines, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, business, and management. Together, we work to design, build, and race a high-performance formula-style race car, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in engineering, project management, and business. This year will be Red Raider Racing’s first competing in the Electric Vehicle division of Formula SAE, with the goal of obtaining the best placing in the team’s history and giving members the best chance at finding a future in the automotive industry from Texas Tech University.

What is next for RRR in 2025?

For this competition year, Red Raider Racing is taking on an exciting new challenge by building its first-ever electric car. This marks a significant step forward for the team, bringing new hurdles that demand greater integration between electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines. The switch to an electric vehicle requires innovative thinking in areas such as battery management, motor control, and chassis design to ensure optimal performance and compliance with competition standards. With this ambitious transition, the team is aiming for a top 20 placement in the international Formula SAE competition, showcasing our commitment to innovation and excellence on a global stage.
