Project Xbox Mini: Modernized Custom Mainboard
The project is a massive hardware design undertaking to create a fully custom, miniaturized replacement motherboard for the original Microsoft Xbox. Why did you decide to make it? Original Xbox hardware is bulky, aging rapidly, and relies on outdated display and storage standards. While external dongles and optical drive emulators exist, they add clutter and don't solve the core hardware degradation issues. I wanted to tackle this challenge to create the ultimate, no-compromise modern retro console. By designing a completely custom circuit topology from the ground up, I can eliminate legacy bottlenecks, integrate modern ICs directly onto the board, and give the community a sleek, ultra-compact hardware platform that preserves the original silicon's capability while upgrading the I/O for the modern era.
How does it work? This project is executed in two distinct phases: extraction and miniaturization.
- Phase 1: requires working directly from high-resolution de-layered board scans to trace the original layout, recover the netlist then redraw the schematic for the Xbox from the ground up. Make 1:1 identical board to verify the netlist / layout and verify functionality.
- Phase 2: Redesigns the system architecture into a high-density miniature PCB. This involves routing a complex multi-layer board to accommodate the original CPU/GPU, while seamlessly integrating modern ICs to handle native HDMI, WiFi, and SD card interfaces.
