Northeastern Electric Racing Electrical Team

Founded in 2018, Northeastern Electric Racing (NER) is a student-led team that designs and builds a fully electric formula-style race car for competition in the Formula Hybrid + Electric (FH+E) and Formula SAE Electric series. The team is made up of over 200 students from diverse majors across engineering, computer science, and business, united by a passion for innovation in sustainable vehicle design.

Over the past several years, NER has grown from a small startup team into a nationally competitive program, consistently placing among the top teams at FH+E and earning multiple awards for technical excellence and project management.

Project Overview: Vehicle Control Unit 25A

The Vehicle Control Unit 25A (VCU25A) is the central low voltage electronic system responsible for managing power distribution, communication, and safety across the car. It combines the functionality of our previous processing and power units into a single, streamlined module.

This board regulates and distributes low-voltage power throughout the vehicle, ensuring system safety through built-in protection and intelligent fault detection. It also coordinates communication between the vehicle’s subsystems via CAN and supports high-speed data links for future development.

Designed entirely by students, the VCU25A emphasizes reliability, serviceability, and modular design. Its development involves schematic creation, circuit simulation, firmware integration, and validation testing.

PCBWay’s sponsorship would provide the high-quality manufacturing and assembly services needed to bring this design to life. Fast, precise prototyping is essential for our tight development cycle and allows our team to test and iterate more efficiently before competition. We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with PCBWay and continue pushing the boundaries of student-built electric racing.
