Help support the next generation of engineers at Wilsobotics

Our project is about designing, building, and programming a competition-ready robot to take part in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) — the world’s largest student robotics competition. Each year, a new challenge is released that pushes teams to solve complex engineering problems in creative ways. Our robot must complete tasks such as picking up and manipulating objects, navigating autonomously, and competing in alliance matches against other teams.

We decided to take on this project because we are passionate about engineering, problem-solving, and innovation. As students, we don’t just want to study science and technology in theory — we want to apply it in real-world, hands-on challenges. Robotics gives us that opportunity. It also teaches us vital skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience, while inspiring younger students in our school community to get involved in STEM.

Our robot works by combining mechanical systems, electronics, and software. We build custom subsystems like arms, intakes, and claws, powered by motors and servos, and controlled by a central hub. We use sensors such as webcams for computer vision, distance sensors, and odometry wheels to help the robot understand its environment and navigate accurately during the autonomous period.

A key part of making all of this work is our use of printed circuit boards (PCBs). These allow us to design and customise electronic layouts that connect components efficiently and reliably. For example, PCBs help us distribute power to the many motors and servos across the robot, and they also allow us to integrate additional sensors beyond the standard control hub. Custom PCBs reduce wiring clutter, improve reliability during matches, and give us the flexibility to innovate in ways that off-the-shelf electronics cannot.

However, as a state-school team, our resources are limited. While we have the ambition and dedication to compete at the highest level, we rely heavily on sponsorships to access high-quality parts and materials. Support from companies like yours would not only provide us with the resources to build more advanced and reliable PCBs, but also help us inspire the next generation of engineers by showing what’s possible with teamwork, creativity, and the right support.

We are committed to representing our sponsors proudly on our robot, team uniforms, and outreach materials. By partnering with us, you wouldn’t just be helping us compete — you’d be empowering young engineers to learn, grow, and contribute to the future of technology.
