Golf Buddy

My name is Niklas Krakhofer, and I am the project leader of the diploma thesis “Golf Buddy” at HTL Rennweg (Vienna). Together with my team, I am developing an innovative, autonomous golf trolley that automatically follows a golfer and enhances the game with smart features. The Golf Buddy detects the player’s position via a tracking system and reliably follows without any physical effort. In addition, an integrated touchscreen on the golf trolley provides useful information such as weather data, course overview, and score tracking.

With the Golf Buddy, we aim to demonstrate how technology can make golf more comfortable, modern, and accessible.

We are enhancing an existing non-motorized golf trolley with the following features:

A control panel consisting of a touchscreen where player profiles can be created to record scores. It also includes a map of the golf course and a weather forecast.

In addition, we are adding an electric drive system to the trolley, allowing it to move without physical effort. The role that a so-called caddy takes on at professional golf tournaments will, in the future, be carried out by our Golf Buddy.

It will independently provide the golfer's equipment. To achieve this, the golfer carries a transmitter that tracks their position via GPS. The Golf Buddy will be able to follow the path the golfer has taken.

Moreover, a wristband worn by the golfer will be able to record and analyze their swings.

To ensure the safety of our Golf Buddy, it is equipped with sensors to prevent collisions with objects or people.

Energy-efficient: Especially in today’s times, it is important for us to use the energy we have wisely. That’s why, similar to modern electric cars, energy should be recovered through regenerative braking when pushing the device. Additionally, a flexible solar panel should be able to recharge the batteries during the game.
