Bath Zero Racing

Bath Zero

At the Isle of Man TT, we achieved our highest ever 4th place finish, the best result of any university team. This result was the product of a team built around genuine passion, wide expertise, a fun collaborative environment, and a relentless drive to improve. Now we are aiming for the next step.

Bath Zero is a student-led electric motorcycle development team based within the Faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Bath, England. Founded in 2015 as a passion project, we've grown into a richly collaborative endeavour, bringing together expertise across chassis design, cooling systems, low and high voltage engineering, simulation, steering, and aerodynamics. As the team matured, so did our ambitions and structure. Today, our team extends well beyond the engineering department, with students from business, economics, and mathematics taking on meaningful roles. The result is a dynamic, cross-disciplinary, learn-by-doing environment that we're very proud of.

Our location gives us a distinct advantage too. Sitting on the doorstep of what is affectionately known as 'Motorsport Valley', we benefit from an exceptional network of mentors and former team members now working at the highest levels of the sport, including Formula 1, alongside supervisors who bring deep industry knowledge to the table.

Our Current Goal

Our current objective is an ambitious, ground-up redesign of our motorcycle as we set our sights on competing in MotoStudent-E 2027. Building upon a proud history of podium finishes and proven engineering fundamentals, we're targeting the best rookie award and are highly confident in our team's capabilities. MotoStudent is a prestigious international engineering competition held every two years at the MotorLand Aragón Circuit in Spain, where university teams from around the globe engage in intense, wheel-to-wheel. The competition comprises technical inspections, dynamic performance tests, and qualifying sessions, all culminating in a final race.

To get there, we need to push the boundaries of what we can design and manufacture. That's where PCBWay comes in.

Our High Voltage Plans

Central to our latest design is a high-quality, modular battery pack, a complex undertaking that requires manufacturing partners capable of meeting our rigorous standards. We are currently developing three critical components where PCBWay’s specialized expertise and advanced capabilities will be fundamental to our success.

PCB interconnects between wire bonded cells

The first is a PCB interconnect designed to carry high powertrain currents within a confined area whilst maintaining regulation creepage and clearance. The thick 280 oz copper layers and irregular board shape make this a perfect candidate for PCBWay's specialist manufacturing expertise. We're excited to work with their team to push the design further.

3D printed cell spacers

The second is 3D printed cell spacers. The cell holders have been arranged to minimise pack volume, featuring holes for cells, mounting points for the subpack, and a bracket for the cooling fan.

These parts must withstand cell temperatures up to 55°C, meaning materials must not soften under heat and must provide sufficient rigidity to protect cells and the attached PCB from vibrational load. Materials like ABS and Nylon are ideal here and PCBWay are well-adapted to deliver exactly this.

CNC milled mounting brackets

The third is CNC milled mounting brackets. These must be designed to maintain airflow access to the subpacks whilst providing structural stability under vibration and load. The intricate geometry required makes PCBWay's accurate and affordable CNC milling capability a perfect fit for the scale and precision this project demands.

Our Low Voltage plans

We are aiming to build a fully customer dashboard, designed from the ground up to prioritise ergonomics, simplicity, and adaptability over off-the-shelf solutions. By building the system specifically for our bike, we can ensure only the most critical information is presented in a clear, uncluttered format, reducing rider distraction and improving decision-making at race pace. A custom solution also gives us the flexibility to rapidly iterate and adjust display elements as the bike evolves throughout development.

PCBWay's high-quality PCB fabrication is central to making this work. Their manufacturing processes improve signal integrity, reduce electrical noise, and enhance overall system reliability - exactly the standards a competitive racing environment demands. Combined with rapid prototyping support, we can validate and refine our communication, power management, and display control systems far more efficiently, keeping pace with the rest of the bike's development.

What we offer in return

As a student competition team, we understand the value of a genuine partnership. In return for PCBWay's support, we offer:

Prominent placement of your logo and branding on our final race bike livery

Your logo and branding featured on our official team clothing

Dedicated, high-engagement posts across our diverse social media channels

Direct access and networking opportunities with the next generation of engineering talent

Our search for sponsorship extends far beyond simple financial assistance; we deeply prize technical expertise, a spirit of collaboration, and the invaluable chance to utilise the very tools and partnerships that define modern industry standards. We are convinced that a partnership between PCBWay and Bath Zero represents a strong alignment of goals, and we are eager to collaborate as we accelerate toward the MotoStudent-E 2027 competition at Aragon.

We would really value and appreciate the opportunity to work and collaborate with PCBWay in the development of our next generation of race bike. Your support would contribute towards the team and directly support the education and development of engineers and other students.
