-- PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, THE LICENSE WILL BE ATTRIBUTION-COMMERCIAL UPON HEADSET RELEASE TO ENSURE SOMEONE WITH MORE FINANCIAL POWER CAN NOT SIMPLY COPY MY DESIGN. IF YOU WISH TO USE THE DESIGN COMMERCIALLY IN THE MEANTIME, PLEASE JUST LET ME KNOW AT HERMAN@WALKERINDUSTRIES.XYZ AND I'LL LIST YOU AS AN EXCEPTION!
I started this design because after talking to a specific VR company, they told me pancake lenses would cost $1.3k per eye. Not believing plastic should cost that much, I went to work and started disassembling cardboard headsets. After I noticed the image effect when using two lens stacked on each other, I realized that this is something with promise!
This is a quick and easy project you can do at home, however in the link listed later I do include some parts I recommend buying! I also will likely be making a small change to the display to outer lens dimensions to make it a literal penny width's further!
I am working on making the design smaller as well as more capable, but according to someone who has worked in VR for years, the visual quality is a bit above the Quest 2, the dimensions are 1 1/4th inch (display to outer lens) and the FOV is easily over 110 degrees!
This current model has the basics needed to make a headset and is meant to be built around! It has a faceplate, the optical units, lens CAD and the IPD system!
Please check log 8 at https://hackaday.io/project/187343-easy-pancake-lenses to see the model you should reference when putting it together as well as the files for the lens!
In the final steps (upon 1 month commercial release to ensure no quality issues), I will be releasing the final design with electronics, the peripheral LED mod and more!
