Fixel 3DO FZ-1 ODE Mount
This project is a custom 3D printed mounting solution designed to securely install a Fixelsan ODE and a 2.5 inch SATA SSD inside a Panasonic 3DO FZ 1 console.
The design makes use of two existing CD ROM drive mounting points within the FZ 1 chassis, allowing the assembly to be screwed firmly into place without any cutting, drilling, or permanent modification to the console. This keeps the installation fully reversible and preserves the original hardware.
The mount provides a stable platform for the Fixelsan ODE and includes a dedicated mounting area for a standard 2.5 inch SATA SSD. The SSD mounting area features correctly spaced 2.5" SSD / HDD screw holes, allowing the drive to be securely fixed in place.
Ventilation has been deliberately incorporated into the design, with multiple ventilation slots to promote airflow around the ODE. This helps manage heat within the confined space of the console and supports long term reliability during extended use.
A recessed section has been modelled into the mount to accommodate the USB plug and socket used by the ODE. This ensures proper clearance for the connector and cabling without placing strain on the USB port or requiring awkward cable routing. You will need a USB A to SATA adapter. These can be found cheaply on AliExpress.
The design is compatible with any standard 2.5 inch SATA SSD. Clearance has been carefully considered for connectors, ribbon cables, and surrounding components, ensuring the assembly fits neatly within the FZ-1 enclosure without interfering with the case lid or internal shielding. Mechanical hard drives are unlikely to work due to the extra power demands that a spinning disk would put on the console.
The part has been designed specifically for efficient FDM 3D printing. It is printed with the main mounting surface placed directly on the build plate, providing good dimensional accuracy at the mounting points. In this orientation the model requires only minimal supports, reducing material usage and post processing while improving print reliability.
This project offers a clean, repeatable, and well engineered mounting solution for upgrading the internal storage and optical drive emulation hardware of the 3DO FZ 1, improving internal organisation, airflow, and serviceability compared to improvised mounting methods.
