Battery Powered Attendance system using Face Recognition on ESP32-CAM Board
Project Overview
This project presents a face–recognition–based attendance system built using the ESP32-CAM development board. The system captures and recognises faces through its onboard camera and automatically logs attendance to Google Sheets via IFTTT webhooks. Designed to be wireless and battery-powered with a compact PCB, it eliminates manual roll calls, offers real-time data storage, and provides a cost-effective, portable solution for classrooms and workplaces.

Abstract / Summary
This project implements a smart attendance system using an ESP32-CAM development board. It captures faces, recognises registered users, and logs their attendance automatically into Google Sheets via IFTTT. Operated wirelessly and powered by a lithium battery, the system is compact, efficient, and ideal for classrooms or small offices.

System Design & Architecture
A charger circuit handles battery charging (via TP4056), while a boost converter steps up battery voltage to the level required by the ESP32-CAM. The development board is laid out with connectors and headers for direct mounting, programming access, and stable operation.
Face Recognition & Attendance Flow
- Camera & Web Interface: The ESP32-CAM streams video over WiFi and provides a web-based interface for controlling settings, enrolling faces, and enabling recognition.
- Enrollment: Users’ faces are enrolled (captured multiple times) and assigned a face ID with a corresponding name.
- Recognition: The system compares live camera feed to enrolled faces. If a match is found, the associated name (or ID) is retrieved.
- Cloud Logging: Recognised attendance data is sent via webhooks to IFTTT, which then appends the name and timestamp to a Google Sheets spreadsheet.
Software & Code
- Uses esp_camera.h and other ESP32 camera libraries for initialisation and streaming
- Face-detection and recognition algorithms embedded in firmware for on-device processing
- Web server endpoints for control, status, capture, and streaming are built into the ESP firmware
- Integration code for IFTTT communication (webhooks) to link with Google Sheets
Challenges & Solutions
- Power stability: Ensuring consistent voltage under varying battery conditions via a boost converter
- Recognition accuracy: Careful face enrollment and filtering to reduce false positives/negatives
- Network reliability: WiFi fluctuations handled via retries and error checking in webhook logic
- User interface: Embedding a web interface on the ESP to manage settings and enrollments

Results & Testing
- Successfully enrolled multiple faces, and the system correctly recognised them live via camera feed
- Attendance entries were reliably sent and recorded into Google Sheets via IFTTT
- Tested over extended durations on battery power, showing feasibility for daily usage
Future Enhancements
- Add a fallback to local storage if the network is down
- Add multi-user, multi-location support (e.g. multiple ESP32-CAM units syncing)
- Include administrative UI (add/remove users)
- Add security improvements (encryption, authentication)
- Improve recognition robustness under varying lighting and occlusion
The ESP32-CAM-based attendance system successfully demonstrates how IoT and face recognition can automate record-keeping. It offers a reliable, low-cost, and portable solution for real-time attendance tracking, reducing manual effort and paving the way for smarter classrooms and offices.
