"Soft Start" Inrush Current Limiter for Toroidal Transformer - DIN rail mounted
This simple inrush current limiter is designed to be used with a 500VA toroidal transformer to supply up to 12A. This is ideal for powering 3x NEMA-34 stepper motors, for example to control a large CNC machine.
The board is based on a classic circuit design by Rod Elliot known as Project 39, which is detailed here:
https://sound-au.com/project39.htm
The circuit produces a short delay in the switching on of the mains supply to the transformer, allowing inrush current to dissipate through a power resistor bank.
This module includes an onboard auxiliary transformer (encapsulated) as described by Figure 2 of Rod's page, as well as his suggestion of a potentiometer to adjust the time delay. It also includes the addition of an indicator LED.
The board is designed to be mounted inside the popular and economical LK-PLC25 (transparent) or LK-PLC25b (black) 125x90x41mm plastic DIN rail enclosure by LK Shiny Enclosure:

The mains voltage traces on the board are exposed to allow tinning with additional solder to increase current-carrying capability. All components are through-hole and the board is suitable for dip-soldering as well as hand-soldering.
Terminals can be either Dinkle screw terminals or Euroclamp pluggable terminals (see images):

The board should be made using 3Oz copper.
This circuit uses mains electricity which can be dangerous. No liability is accepted for accident injury or loss incurred by the use of this module.
