ZX-81/Spectrum Sound Card Reproduction: Your Computer, March 1983
In 1983 two specific magazine articles sparked my interest and imagination. Both were designed as peripherals for the ZX-81 and ZX-Spectrum. Both used General Instrument's AY-3-891x (PSG) sound chips. Both projects were beyond my reach. Fast forward to 2025 and they're no longer beyond my reach. So I found copies of the articles, fired up my schematic capture program and got to work.
This project recreates the PCB from the March 1983 issue of Your Computer.
You can find a scanned copy of the magazine here: https://archive.org/details/your-computer-magazine-1983-03/page/n61/mode/2up?q=dice
While the full circuit diagram was shown in the magazine article, there was no PCB layout included. Rather than use a Vero board as suggested I went ahead and laid out and routed a PCB.
The only component that you are likely to have a little trouble finding is the AY-3-8910 chip itself - though they can often be found on retro-computer and arcade-game component sites, ebay and discount electronics sites such as AliExpress.
The rest of the BOM should be readily available from any electronics retailer.
For further details visit the companion github site (https://github.com/FactorOfMatt/sinclair-zx-psg) where you will find more details, the other PSG design I recreated and the ZX Spectrum "minuetz" program to show off your new sound-card.
