Ultimate Brick Game: A Childhood Icon Rewired
The Ultimate Brick Game is a complete hardware reimagining of the iconic "9999-in-1" handheld. While the exterior retains the classic nostalgia of the 90s, the interior has been entirely replaced by a powerful Linux-based system. Powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, this project transforms a cheap toy into a high-performance retro gaming console capable of running everything from NES to PlayStation 1 with professional-grade hardware.
The Engineering Journey
What started as a complex "bird's nest" of wires in early prototypes has evolved into a clean, replicable, and robust industrial design. The project now features a modular system of custom PCBs designed to fit perfectly within the original, cramped shell.
Through the support of PCBWay, these boards have moved from DIY prototypes to professional-grade hardware, ensuring signal integrity for the 60 FPS display and a noise-free audio experience.
Key Features
Heart of the Machine: Raspberry Pi Zero 2W running RetroPie.
Pro-Grade Display: 2.8" (or 2.4") TFT SPI display running at a fluid 60 FPS.
Advanced Power Management: Dual 18650 cells (2S setup) providing over 8 hours of battery life, featuring USB-C fast charging (9V compatible).
Custom Audio: Integrated PAM8403 amplifier with a physical volume knob and a custom low-pass filter for clean sound.
Pocket Mode: A dedicated physical switch that disables controller inputs, allowing you to carry the console powered-on in your pocket without accidental in-game movements.
Connectivity: Support for Bluetooth controllers and an expansion module for RCA TV-out and external USB peripherals.
The Hardware Kit
I am providing the complete open-source package for the community:
Main Board: Centralizes audio, PWM brightness control (via 555 timer), and Pi interfacing.
Controller Boards: Front and rear (L/R triggers) PCBs that eliminate manual wiring.
Power Board: High-efficiency step-down converter and battery monitoring.
3D Fabrication: STL files for internal supports and cutting jigs to modify the original shell with precision.
Software: Pre-compiled drivers and optimized configuration files for a plug-and-play experience.
The Ultimate Brick Game is a tribute to our childhood, re-engineered for the modern age. It is a proof of concept that with professional PCB manufacturing and creative 3D design, even the
