Key point

The Audio Shield doesn’t “talk” or display messages on its own.

It’s for audio input/output (record/play tones, measure signals). To “say things” or show warnings, you use:

Teensy + code to detect conditions (temp high, fault, etc.)

Then output the warning via one of these channels:

Touchscreen display (best)

Buzzer / speaker / audio output (audio shield helps here)

PLC / HMI via industrial comms (advanced but doable)

Option A (fastest): Touchscreen warnings (recommended)

What you need

A TFT touchscreen (SPI or parallel)

Teensy 4.1

Temp sensor (DS18B20 / thermistor / TMP36 / MAX31855 if high temp)

How it works

Read temperature continuously

If temp > threshold:

show big red warning screen

latch the fault

optionally shut down outputs

Example behaviors

“TEMP HIGH — SHUTDOWN”

“OVER CURRENT — RESET REQUIRED”

“LOW WATER — CHECK SYSTEM”

This is the cleanest “PLC-like” experience on a Teensy.

Option B: “Say things” using Audio Shield (voice / tones)

If you want actual speech, you have two realistic choices:

B1) Simple: Beeps / alarm tones ✅

Audio Shield outputs loud tones easily

Use it for:

warning beeps

escalating alarms

“chirp patterns” for different faults

B2) Actual voice (harder, but possible)

Store short voice clips on SD card (WAV files)

Teensy plays them through the audio shield

Example:

“Temperature high”

“Fault latched”

“System armed”

This is doable, but it’s more wiring + software.

Option C: Use a PLC + touch HMI (industrial approach)

If you want a real PLC to show warnings:

C1) Best practical way: Teensy sends data to PLC

Teensy reads sensors + runs control logic

Teensy transmits:

temperature

fault flags

status codes

to PLC/HMI via:

Serial RS-485

Modbus RTU

(or Ethernet if your PLC supports it)

PLC/HMI then displays:

alarms

trends

logs

This is robust and “industrial.”

Note: Don’t try to make the PLC do the high-speed waveform stuff; let Teensy do that.

What you should do (simple step plan)

Decide your warning output:

Touchscreen UI, or PLC/HMI, or audio alarms

Add sensors:

temperature + current + water level (if applicable)

Implement 3 safety layers in code:

Warning (approaching limit)

Trip (shut down outputs)

Latch (requires reset button)

Output warnings:

big text on TFT

alarm tone / voice clip

status codes to PLC

Can the Audio Shield make it “say things”? Yes, if you play tones or voice clips.

Can it show messages on a PLC touchscreen? Not directly — that’s Teensy ↔ PLC communications.

Can you do “TEMP HIGH” warnings? Yes, easily.
