DIY Laptop USB-C Power Management Board for 3S Li-ion Batteries
What it is:
This project is an open-source USB-C power management board for DIY laptops and other portable computers. It combines battery charging, battery protection, and regulated power output on one board so a builder can power a complete system from a 3S lithium-ion battery pack.
The board is designed around a 3-cell lithium battery architecture and supports USB-C charging as well as USB-C power output for internal devices such as a main computing board and a display. The goal is to make custom laptop builds cleaner, more compact, and easier to reproduce.
Main features:
- USB-C charging input
- 3S lithium-ion battery management
- Battery monitoring and protection
- USB-C power outputs for internal devices
- Open-source PCB design for DIY laptop projects
- Compact layout intended for embedded use inside a portable system
How it works:
The board accepts USB-C power for charging and manages a 3S battery pack. A battery monitor/protection IC handles pack supervision and safety functions, while buck regulator stages provide stable output rails for the rest of the system. USB-C connectors are used so the same overall design approach can fit a range of DIY computers and displays that already use USB-C for power.
This makes the board useful as a reusable platform for builders who want a dedicated internal power board instead of a loose collection of charger modules, boost converters, and battery protection boards.
Main components:
- IP2368_I2C_COUT
- BQ76905RGRR
- TPS565208DDCR
- TPS56339DDCR
- USB-C receptacles
- IRLR7843 MOSFETs
- AO3400A MOSFETs
- TVS protection diodes
- Power inductors and supporting passives
Project status:
This is an active work-in-progress hardware project. The PCB has been designed and prepared for fabrication and assembly, and the design will be refined further after hardware bring-up and testing.
Why I made it:
I wanted a cleaner and more integrated power solution for DIY laptop-style systems. A lot of custom portable builds rely on separate off-the-shelf modules, which makes wiring bulky and harder to reproduce. This board is meant to bring charging, battery management, and power delivery together into a single design that other builders can also use.
