A Modular, WiFi-enabled Bunsen Burner Monitoring System for Smart Laboratory
We developed a modular, WiFi-enabled fire monitoring system tailored for Bunsen burners. Each burner is equipped with a sensor node that provides visual and auditory alerts based on a countdown timer and can automatically shut off the gas if left unattended. When connected to WiFi, a central hub collects data from multiple sensors, activates warning signs, and forwards status to display modules placed in offices for enhanced situational awareness. Remote access is enabled via standard HTTP, allowing off-campus monitoring. Designed for affordability, scalability, and ease of replication, this system enhances lab fire safety, especially where traditional detectors fall short, and doubles as an educational tool for hands-on learning in electronics, instrumentation, and lab safety. Full PCB designs and code are shared openly for others to build and adapt the system.
