SATA Backplane for 10 inch rack systems
This project is an open-source SATA backplane PCB designed specifically for compact 10-inch rack mount enclosures. It provides a clean, reliable way to connect and power multiple 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drives in a modular rack setup — ideal for DIY NAS builds, homelabs, servers, and storage experiments.
Key Features
- 6 SATA Drive Slots – Supports up to 6 drives via standard SATA connectors.
- Simple Power Distribution – Integrated screw terminal block for +3.3V, +5V, +12V, and GND rails, with filtering capacitors for stable operation.
- Rack-Friendly – Designed to fit 10-inch rack mounts, making it easy to integrate into small server or lab environments.
- Modular & Open Hardware – Released under CC0 / Public Domain license, encouraging reuse, modification, and community improvements.
- 3D Printed Support – A matching 3D-printed frame/enclosure has been developed to complement the PCB for quick and robust installation.
Why This Project?
Standard SATA backplanes are often designed for larger 19-inch server racks or expensive proprietary enclosures. This project fills the gap for hobbyists, makers, and professionals who want compact, cost-effective, and customizable storage solutions.
Open Source
Both the PCB design (KiCad) and 3D print files are fully open source and available on GitHub:
