TribalNet: Solar-Powered LoRa Mesh Network for Disaster Communication
TribalNet – RF-Based Disaster Communication & Tracking System
A low-cost, solar-powered, long-range LoRa mesh network that keeps remote and tribal communities connected during emergencies when cellular and internet infrastructure fails.
The Problem
Many tribal villages, forest regions, and disaster-prone communities have no or poor cellular coverage, and lose all communication during floods, landslides, cyclones, or grid failures — with no way to call for medical help, fire rescue, or broadcast warnings.
The Solution
TribalNet is an autonomous, solar-powered LoRa mesh system that lets remote villages exchange emergency alerts, status pings, and telemetry over long distances — no GSM, Wi-Fi, or internet required.
How It Works
- Village Node: ESP32 WROOM-32 + SX1278 LoRa (433 MHz) + solar panel + Li-ion battery, with a panic button, siren, and MAX7219 8×32 LED matrix display
- Authority/Control Station: ESP32 + SX1278 LoRa gateway with a central monitoring dashboard for alert display and emergency dispatch
Villagers press a panic button to send an instant "EMERGENCY! Need help!" alert over LoRa; the control station receives it, sounds an alert, and displays village status ("SAFE" / "EMERGENCY") for responders. The system runs entirely off-grid, powered by solar with battery backup, and each hop can cover multiple kilometers depending on terrain and antenna height.
