L:293D_Motor_Driver v27_2026-08-28
This is a general-purpose DC motor driver module built around two L293D dual H-bridge ICs, giving control over up to 4 DC motors from a single small board (roughly 51 x 65 mm). It's designed as a reusable building block rather than a one-off — something I can drop into future robotics, motion, or automation projects without re-inventing a motor driver circuit every time.
Why I made it
I wanted a standard, known-good motor driver board I could reach for whenever a project needed to move something with DC motors, instead of prototyping H-bridge wiring on a breadboard each time. Designing it as its own PCB also meant I could bake in the extras — like limit switch inputs — that I always end up needing anyway.
How it works
- Two L293D ICs (U1, U2) each independently drive a pair of DC motors through their built-in H-bridges, giving 4 motor outputs total.
- Motors connect through two 4-pin headers — MOV_MOTORS (horizontal/left-right axis) and VERT_MOTORS (vertical/up-down axis) — each wired for 2 motors per axis.
- Four limit-switch inputs (LEFT, RIGHT, UP1, UP2) let each axis sense end-of-travel, so a controlling microcontroller can stop or reverse a motor automatically instead of relying on timing alone.
A dedicated MOTOR_PWR input feeds motor power separately from logic, with 0.1µF decoupling caps on each IC and a 100µF bulk capacitor to keep the supply clean under motor switching loads.
Designed as a 2-layer board in Eagle, keeping the layout compact and low-cost to manufacture.
