We are CU Hyperloop! A student engineering team based out of CU Boulder that designs and builds a micro-Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Every year we do this so that we can go to Texas and compete in the international Not-a-Boring Competition. We've earned multiple awards alongside 2nd and 3rd place global finishes.

Our machine is 2500lbs and 14ft long and operates a little bit like an inchworm. We have 3 in-machine PCBs that control our navigation system, our hexapod (or thrusting) system, and our grippers (or anchoring) system. These boards communicate with our software logic using Teensy microcontrollers and ethernet. Our goal for the competition is to mine 100ft and complete a 5-degree underground turn. Our hexapod gives us 6-degress-of-freedom, and our navigation system gives us the position data we need to maintain an underground trajectory.

Our entire design and machine fabrication, software stacks, electrical board design and soldering is done by our student members. This team allows undergraduate and graduate students to gain unparalleled hands-on experience doing real engineering - entirely for free.
