13 segment display piece - minimal occlusion
These are part of a project where I am adding a 16 character segmented display to the second smaller rear windshield of my vehicle (Insight) so that I can have better communication with drivers behind me. I will be able to inform other drivers if they have a flat, left their blinker on, or give a simple reason if something is affecting my driving. (Fragile cargo, engine issue, etc.)
I have simplified down to 13-segments per character to save on total inputs, reducing cost when choosing display drivers, while losing almost none of the legibility of a full 14 segmented display
These have been designed with minimal PCB surface area and large cutouts to help limit their impact on visibility.
While a transparent PCB would be ideal it wouldn't be cost effective at this scale. This design is intended to be a reasonable solution.
Each character can, and in my case will, use nine M2 set-screws as contacts. They are to be set flush with the top face of the PCB, then soldered in place.
BOM lists GREEN LEDs, please remember to change if you are making a different colored display
