Summary: Why to use jumper wires in PC board design
Adding jumper wires to a printed circuit board provides flexible configuration options. For example, in my Note Sequencer, jumpers can repeat specific notes, and in my two-player reaction game, they set the tri-color LED's color to indicate the winner, chosen by the builder based on available options. Jumper wires also replace slide switches when only one option is needed; I used one instead of a switch in Rodney Thayer’s 24-Hour Digital Clock, allowing for a simplified power setup. Overall, jumper wires make PCBs more adaptable. I use single pin connector footprints to add a spot to add a jumper wire. KICad also has jumper footprints that allow solder to form a jumper.
