BulkyMIDI-32 Module
Based on the mt32-pi project, bringing you the auditory excellence of the Roland MT32 in an obtainable package that won't cost more than my current car. Widely considered to be the ultimate in retro MIDI-modules, it's the audio card every 90s PC gamer eventually found out was never actually an audio card and instead its own thing completely separate from your computer. The BulkyMIDI-32 is simply my attempt at building something that would look nice on my desk while playing those classic Sierra and Lucasfilm games, it is just a set of PCBs and all using through-hole components so if you own a kitchen table and a soldering then you should be able to build one.
This is the main module, check out the related shared projects for a listing of all additional modules as well as any adapters that you might need. These provide additional functionality beyond what you will need to use it as a MT32-PI, and so I recommend that you take a look and decide what you will need. The BulkyMIDI-32 Extras-board in particular provides a passive audio mixer, additional MIDI OUT and THRU ports as well as MIDI-connectivity over RS-232. In order to build a device that looks exactly as shown, you'll additionally need the PCBs for the following shared projects:
- BulkyMIDI-32 Module
- BulkyMIDI-32 Extras
- BulkyMIDI-32 Module Panel
- BulkyMIDI-32 Module FP1
- BulkyMIDI-32 FB2
For a slightly simpler device without the extras board, it is recommended that you get the following shared projects:
- BulkyMIDI-32 Module
- BulkyMIDI-32 Module Panel
- BulkyMIDI-32 Module FP2
- BulkyMIDI-32 FB2
Over time I've also expanded the project to include a standalone player for MIDI-files (Play), a sixteen channel monitor that lights up depending on channel usage as well as a simple audio switch in the same styling. If like me you grew up using software audio players looking like separate audio modules, then you now can actually start building one of those in real life! Check out the videos below for an introduction to what the MT32-PI (and BulkyMIDI-32) actually is, the second video covers the entire build process of the simpler device mentioned above.
