Porsche 911 SC Airbox – Time for a Modern Solution!

The original Porsche 911 SC airbox is a well-known weak point. Manufactured using plastic technology from the 1970s, these components are now over 40 years old. Over time, the plastic becomes brittle and increasingly prone to cracks and damage, especially from intake backfires.

What's even crazier are the prices for replacement parts. Even used, repaired, or aftermarket airboxes are sometimes offered at ridiculously high prices.

With today's advances in 3D printing technology and modern high-temperature-resistant materials, it should be possible to develop a stronger, more durable, and more affordable alternative.

That's exactly why I've started designing my own custom airbox for my RWB Porsche 911 SC, equipped with electronic fuel injection (EFI) and a Trijekt engine management system.

The Vision: A Modular Airbox for the Porsche G-Model

The long-term goal is to develop a modular system supporting two different configurations:

Version 1 – Original Bosch K-Jetronic

Fully compatible with the original Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system

Retains the original Porsche air filter

Designed for straightforward installation using factory mounting points

Modern materials and improved structural design

A durable replacement for aging original airboxes

Version 2 – K-Jetronic Delete / EFI Conversion

Simplified, compact airbox without unnecessary K-Jetronic components

Designed for modern electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems

Optimized construction with fewer components

Ideal for custom engine builds, EFI conversions, and Porsche restomod projects

One Platform – Multiple Possibilities

The idea is to develop a common modular platform that can be adapted to different engine configurations and fuel injection systems.

Thanks to modern CAD design, 3D printing technology, and advanced engineering materials, replacement parts could become easier, faster, and significantly more affordable to manufacture.

Instead of relying on increasingly rare and expensive original components, Porsche enthusiasts could potentially manufacture replacement parts locally using shared CAD files and modern production methods.

Open Source & Community Development

AIR WERK is intended to be more than just another custom automotive part.

The vision is to create an open-source or community-driven engineering project, bringing together Porsche enthusiasts, CAD designers, engineers, and 3D printing specialists.

By sharing designs, testing different materials, improving manufacturing techniques, and exchanging real-world experience, the community could help develop better solutions for classic Porsche vehicles.
