Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (DTU)

DTU-AUV is a student-led engineering team dedicated from Delhi Technological University, to developing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remote operated vehicles (ROVs) for various national and international competitions like RoboSub, SAUVC, MATE ROV. Since 2007, we have been designing and building our bot from the ground up—engineering everything from the mechanical structure to the electronic systems and software. Our mission is to advance the capabilities of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) technology while promoting both technical and professional development among our members, equipping them for future career success.

At DTU-AUV, our team consists of undergrad students of multi-disciplinary backgrounds, experience levels to collaborate in developing an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) capable of executing complex underwater tasks. These challenges include autonomous navigation, precision torpedo deployment, and object manipulation. From mechanical design to electronics and software development, we strive to build as much of the underwater vehicle in-house as possible, ensuring that every component showcases our ingenuity and technical expertise. Our embedded team is working on designing, manufacturing and testing PCBs for the bot ,while also writing the bots firmware for  boards equipped with system-on-chip. We use custom PCBs to  reduce wiring, optimize space making it as compact as possible, achieving full hardware control, enhancing our skills and learning on the way.

Several key objectives we aim to accomplish this year include:

  1. The main controller board featuring an ARM-based STM32G4 microcontroller serves as the central interface for various sensors, facilitating data collection, system communication, and task execution. Designed to act as a gateway between different subsystems, it ensures seamless integration and efficient operation. The 4 layered orange colored PCB with immersion gold finish and dimension of 88x108mm  is constructed with an inner copper weight of 1 oz and an outer copper weight of 1 oz to support reliable performance and durability.

2. Our 100A, 3s-6s, Electronic Speed Controller with up to 8-layer design for precise thruster control, ensuring smooth and efficient propulsion. The PCB is fabricated in orange color, immersion gold finish, dimensions of 18.5x34.5mm with an inner copper weight of 1.5 oz and an outer copper weight of 2 oz to support reliable performance and durability.

3. A high-performance 5S Battery Management System designed for AUVs power systems, ensuring efficiency, safety, and reliability. 4-layered PCB of 80A continuous, 150A surge current handling with thermal optimization. TI BQ7692000PW + BQ78350DBTR dual-IC for advanced monitoring and fuel gauging. High-accuracy sensing (0.1% tolerance) for voltage and current. I2C & SMBus interfaces for real-time monitoring. Multi-layer protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, short circuits, and thermal risks. Supports 3S/4S/5S Li-ion & LiFePO4 with configurable setting. The red colored PCB with immersion gold finish and dimension of 72x60mm is constructed with an inner copper weight of 2 oz and an outer copper weight of 2 oz to support reliable performance and durability.
