8080A CPU Breakout Board for Logic Analyser/Analyzer
A logic analyser is an invaluable tool for diagnosing computer faults but I find myself hesitant to use it due to the fiddly test clips that you must clip on to every leg. It's tedious and time consuming ... well, for me at least it is.
Instead, let's use pre-made 2x4-pin Dupont-style wiring that we can quickly plug into this breakout board and then into our logic analyser. I got this idea from Marcel's breakout board for the 6803/6809 CPU.
I have created several designs: this one for the 8080A or Soviet КР580ВМ80А, Z80, 6502, 6510 and CDP1802. I will add them to PCBway's shared project once I've been able to verify they work. If they're not here you can find files in my Github repository.
The following parts are required:
- One 40-pin male-male turned pin header (creates two 20-pin legs for plugging into the CPU socket or piggybacking onto the CPU itself)
- One 2x40-pin header (makes two 2x20-pin for analyser wiring)
- One 40-pin IC socket (turned pin fits better)
- Enough 2x4-pin "Dupont" female-female cables
I have tested this on a soldered-in Soviet КР580ВМ80А. Despite the pin pitch difference (2.5mm vs 2.54mm) it worked fine when piggybacked onto the CPU under analysis. It was quite quick & simple to connect and start capturing a trace.
