Missouri S&T Rocket Design Team-Phoenix Liquid Rocket Fins

Missouri S&T Rocket Design Team Liquid Project

We are the Missouri S&T Rocket Design Team, a collegiate design team focused on launching student designed and built rockets to space. One of our major projects is the liquid rocket. Rather than using solid propellants (we have another project for that), these rockets use liquid nitrous and ethanol. Due to their nature, they are signifigantly complicated and difficult. As such, a very small number of teams have fired or launched liquid rockets. At our launch in June 2025, we aim to become the 13th collegiate team in the world to launch a liquid rocket, Phoenix. I have attached a youtube video, with footage from our cold flow. This is an extremely important step in designing and testing a liquid rocket.

PCBWay & Phoenix

One of the most important parts of our rocket is the fins. These go near the bottom of the rocket. The fins keep the rocket stable, and pointed skyward throughout the flight. Due to the large size of Phoenix (she is 6 inches wide and over 14 feet tall!), the fins are very large, and have to be made from aluminum. Without these fins, the rocket simply cannot launch, as it would immediately go out of control. While the team can afford to purchase and waterjet these fins, we are not currently capable of filleting the fins. In addition, this would be a fairly time intensive task. With PCBWay's help, the team can complete and launch our first ever liquid rocket. In addition to our gratitude, we also offer several sponsorship tiers.
