FTC 14943 Robotics
Our team, Team 14943, the Weber RamBots, represents a group of passionate high school students from Weber High School dedicated to advancing STEM education through the art of robotics. As participants in the prestigious FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), we embrace the opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and push the boundaries of what is possible with engineering and programming. More than just building robots, our team is committed to fostering a love for STEM within our community, inspiring the next generation of engineers, and contributing to the broader mission of technological advancement.
This season, our project focuses on tackling the challenges presented by Into the Deep, the 2023–2024 FTC game that immerses participants in a scenario of underwater exploration. The game tasks teams with designing robots capable of collecting and scoring samples, strategically placing specimens, and navigating a dynamic and competitive field. In response to this challenge, we have built a robot that combines innovative engineering solutions with advanced programming techniques to excel in both autonomous and driver-controlled phases of the competition.
At the core of our robot’s design is the Variable Position Arm, an engineering marvel developed to perform dual tasks with speed and precision. This arm is powered by a high-torque motor geared for rapid response and robust operation. The mechanism ensures seamless transitions between collecting and scoring samples, while its durability allows it to withstand the physical demands of intense matches. Our team’s design process emphasized minimizing gaps and mechanical strain, resulting in a reliable and high-performing component critical to the robot’s success.
Another key feature of our robot is the Viper Slide System, which extends up to 1.5 meters to reach elevated scoring zones. Supported by a reinforced structure and powered by a motorized belt system, the slide ensures smooth and precise motion even under significant load. This feature allows our robot to interact with game elements at varying heights, enabling a versatile approach to scoring and gameplay.
Our Mecanum Drive Base exemplifies our commitment to advanced mobility and control. By leveraging a bevel gear mechanism and discreet motor placement, our drive base allows for independent wheel movement. This design facilitates strafing, precise turns, and complex maneuvers, giving our robot a competitive edge in navigating the field. Additionally, the robust frame supports the robot’s other systems, ensuring structural integrity throughout the match.
In addition to mechanical innovations, our robot incorporates advanced programming techniques using the FTC Road Runner library. The autonomous mode utilizes odometry pods to track the robot’s position accurately, enabling precise navigation and scoring. Meanwhile, our teleoperated mode relies on a fully manual control system, empowering the driver to respond dynamically to the fast-paced demands of the game.
Our project represents more than just a technical achievement; it is a testament to the power of teamwork, creativity, and perseverance. Every component of our robot reflects countless hours of collaboration, trial and error, and relentless dedication to improvement. Through this project, we aim to not only excel in competition but also inspire our peers and community to embrace the limitless possibilities of STEM.
Our team takes immense pride in our dedication to community outreach, making a meaningful impact through over 150 outreach events that have touched the lives of more than 2,500 individuals. We actively engage with local schools, STEM organizations, and community events to share our passion for robotics and inspire the next generation of innovators. Through our efforts, we have built connections with over 10 other teams, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing that strengthens the entire FIRST Tech Challenge community. Additionally, we have mentored more than three teams, offering guidance, technical expertise, and encouragement to help them achieve their goals. By prioritizing outreach, we strive to create a ripple effect, spreading the transformative power of STEM education far and wide.
