Scott Equalizer TC Main Piston Head Holder Tool
For bike enthusiasts that like to repair their own stuff.
The Scott Equalizer TC damper's main piston head can be a challenge to remove without the right tools. This is something you may have to do if you need to replace wiper seal of the main piston.
A vice cannot be use directly without destroying the head finish.
Some people proposes to drill holes under the head bumper and then to insert 2 metal rods to hold the head while unscrewing the shaft. But doing so can damage the head permanently.
The way we did it is to use an aluminum piece that fit the head perfectly. We used PCBWay CNC service to make the piece.
How to use the tool:
- Cut the machined aluminum piece in half.

- Clean the surface of the large hole, so no aluminum shaving can scratch the surface of the piston head.
- Use a file to deburr the cut edge of the main hole. Be cautious to not file the inside of the main hole surface.
- Clean the holder surface.
- Use two ¼ inch bolts with two washers for each holes.
- Remove the white ring and the quad seal of the piston head before mounting it on the holder.
- If everything is clean, mount the head of the piston in the main hole and tighten the 2 bolts as needed to avoid the head to spin freely inside the holder.
- Install the holder with mounted head in a vice.
- Use a wrench or similar tool to hold the piston shaft.
- Now you should be good to unscrew the head. If it is the first time, expect the head to be stuck. Use a robber hammer against the wrench. As soon as it starts moving, do it by hand.
Thank you.
