ESP-NOW Integrated Security & Environment Station
What is this project about?
This project is an Environmental Security Station designed to make home safety monitoring more reliable and accessible. Built around the ESP32-S3 microcontroller, the system continuously monitors natural gas leaks, noise levels, and climate data. Instead of standard Wi-Fi, it uses the ESP-NOW protocol for high-speed, low-latency communication between devices.
Why did I decide to make it?
Most smart home solutions rely heavily on cloud services, meaning they stop working if the internet goes out. I wanted to build an independent, modular system that stays functional during network outages. Developing this station also allowed me to practice sensor integration and custom hardware design using components like the MQ-4 gas sensor and Waveshare Sound Sensor V2.
How does it work?
The station processes data from three primary sources:
Gas Detection: An MQ-4 sensor monitors for potential natural gas leaks.
Audio Monitoring: A Waveshare Sound Sensor V2 tracks unusual noise spikes or existing alarm sounds.
Climate Tracking: A DHT22 sensor monitors temperature and humidity levels.
Data Transmission: All gathered data is instantly shared with other nodes via ESP-NOW for real-time alerts.
Design & Manufacturing Notes
I initially prototyped this project using home-made PCBs through toner transfer and acid etching. For the current professional manufacturing phase, I utilized Fritzing to generate the Gerber files. While I am learning KiCad, I chose Fritzing for this specific submission because its direct "breadboard-to-PCB" workflow allowed me to move extremely fast from my physical prototype to a finalized layout without losing the original design logic. This approach helped me focus more on the firmware stability and sensor accuracy during the development cycle.
