PCB maker Unitech Printed Circuit Board will spend NT$1.5 billion (US$49.62 million) to ramp up its production capacity of any-layer HDI boards and flex-rigid boards in 2014, according to industry sources.
Unitech is expected to see sales of flex-rigid boards increase over 50% in the year as more smartphone vendors are using flex-rigid boards for their high-end models, said the sources.
Overall, sales of flex-rigid boards will account for 30% of Unitech's total revenues in 2014 compared to less than 20% a year earlier, added the sources.
The production value of flex-rigid boards from Taiwan's PCB makers in Taiwan and China currently accounts for just 1% of makers' total PCB production, according to Taiwan's IEK (Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center).
