CNC Machining

Knurling is a mechanical process for rolling patterns on the handle or other working surfaces of metal products. It is mainly used for anti-slip. Its basic principle is the surface extrusion process or cutting process. This article will talk about the problems that are easy to occur in the knurling process and give some suggestions.

1.Select the corresponding knurling knife and knurling wheel according to the knurling drawings

In the process of knurling, if the workpiece material is stainless steel, it is recommended to use the cutting knurling cutter. If the workpiece is relatively small, a clamped knurling cutter can be used. If the workpiece is made end face knurling, it is recommended to use an end face or cone knurling cutter. If wanting to process the small gap and high hardness knurling, you need to select a suitable knife.

2.Make knurling knife align with the center height of the workpiece

When installing the knurling cutter, the center height of it should be aligned with the height of the machine tool workpiece, otherwise, it is difficult to cut into the workpiece surface during processing. Then put the tool and the workpiece at a small angle, about 3 °, so the knurling cutter can easily cut into the workpiece. Besides, the knurling cutter must be installed firmly, because the cutting force during knurling is much larger than that of turning. In addition to tightening the tool holder screw, the tool holder handle should also be pressed.

3.Increase the feed rate when initial processing

The knurling wheel will be pressed on the workpiece during processing, so the pressure cannot be too small, otherwise, it is easy to produce cluttered texture. A large feed rate can quickly press the pattern, and then repeat the rolling until the texture is formed. It should be noted that the feed rate should not be too large, otherwise, it will cause the knurling wheel to collapse and even damage the machine tool.

4.Processing speed control

The cutting speed is about 10-15m/min. Taking the outer diameter of 20mm as an example, the rotational speed can be selected at about 200. Precise digital-controlled machine tool must be cooled with emulsion lubrication.

  • The formula for cutting speed

Vc=πDN/1000

π: 3.14

D: the diameter of the rotating body on the machine

N: speed

1000: mm to m
