Is it ok to switch a high frequency signal with a low frequency transistor?

If you have a high frequency signal, going through the collector - emitter of a general purpose transistor, can you just turn it on/of with a low frequency signal at the base?

If you leave the transistor on, would it be able to handle the high frequency signal?

What if you want to do AM modulation, could you do AM modulation of a Ghz carrier, given a low frequency signal applied at the base of the low frequency transistor? Thanks in advance.
