ARMduino UNO (PY32F030) – Ultra Low-Cost 32-Bit ARM Development Board
The classic Arduino Uno form factor has been the standard gateway into electronics and physical computing for years. However, traditional 8-bit AVR boards come with limitations: limited processing speed, restricted RAM/Flash, lack of native hardware debugging (SWD), rigid 5V logic, and higher silicon costs, and the newbie maker just realises being out of features in a month.
To solve this, I designed the ARMduino UNO PY32F030.
The goal of this project is to bring modern 32-bit ARM performance to the classic Uno footprint at an ultra-low price point. By combining the budget-friendly Puya PY32F030 ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller with the robust WCH CH343P USB-to-UART bridge and a modern USB Type-C port, this board dramatically cuts bill-of-materials (BOM) costs while delivering higher clock speeds, richer peripheral sets, and lower power consumption.
It retains 100% compatibility with the familiar Arduino IDE and software ecosystem, allowing makers and students to use standard Arduino libraries and sketches out of the box. Additionally, it solves common maker frustrations by breaking out 6 additional GPIOs, providing onboard 3.3V/5V jumper switching for multi-logic interfacing, and adding a dedicated SWD header for professional step-by-step hardware debugging. The board can be run using the PY32Duino Arduino board package, or the upcoming board package I'm working on, to bring specifically for this board.
I am a student, hardware enthusiast, and embedded systems developer passionate about designing custom microcontrollers, development boards, and developer tools. I love bridging the gap between low-level hardware architecture and accessible, open-source software ecosystems. My passion lies in building practical, community-driven hardware that makes engineering and robotics education accessible, affordable, and easy to learn for everyone.
Key Hardware Highlights:
Ultra-Low Cost Bill of Materials: Leverages the cost-effective Puya PY32F030 MCU and CH343P USB-TTL bridge to create a full-featured 32-bit dev board at a fraction of legacy board costs.
Modern USB Type-C Connector: Replaces outdated USB Type-B and Micro-USB ports with a sturdy, reversible USB Type-C interface for flashing and power.
6 Extra Breakout GPIOs: Breaks out additional internal MCU pins beyond the standard Uno pinout for extra sensors, actuators, or displays without needing external multiplexers.
Dual-Voltage Jumper Configuration (3.3V / 5.0V): Simple onboard jumper switch toggles the board's native logic between 3.3V and 5.0V, eliminating the need for external level shifters.
Dedicated SWD Header: Includes direct SWDIO/SWCLK pins to enable real-time hardware breakpoints, single-stepping, and rapid flashing with ST-Link, J-Link, or CMSIS-DAP / DAP-Link probes.
Arduino IDE & Toolchain Compatibility: Works seamlessly within the standard Arduino software workflow with familiar pin mappings and library support.
