Pipistrelle BatWalk auto scanning / time-expanding bat detector
An automatically-scanning, heterodyne / time-expansion bat detector. The best 'my first bat detector' ever designed, about £15 build cost.

NOTE - Gerbers updated to v. 1.5 17th September 2023, stencil mask and form factor has changed - if you buy PCBs, buy a new stencil mask.
Frustrated by 'twiddle the dial' heterodyne detectors, and realising that the user interface of my pipistrelle was a little too complex, this version makes everything as simple as possible.
There is no SD card interface, so no 'record to SD card' function.
There is no rotary controller for manual frequency selection.
It just scans and heterodynes, or captures then time-expands the capture, with the capture triggered by ultrasonic activity.
Two buttons provide the following functions :
Left single click - speak current heterodyne frequency
Right button single click - freeze / unfreeze current heterodyne frequency - pulsing LED indicates freeze frequency
Left button double click : move down to the next 'interesting' frequency
Right button double click : move up to the next 'interesting' frequency
Left button long click - toggle between heterodyne and time expansion - pulsing LED pattern and spoken feedback indicates time expansion or heterodyne mode
The BatWalk supports a set of 7 'Interesting' frequencies that can be flashed into firmware for different territories. The default frequencies (for use in the UK) are :
19.8kHz - Noctules
25kHz - Serotines / Noctules / Pip socials
36kHz - Daubenton's, other Myotis
45kHz - Common Pipistrelle
55kHz - Soprano Pipistrelle
82kHz - Greater Horseshoe
110kHz - Lesser Horseshoe
These have the advantage of illuminating a different LED on the spectrum for each frequency selected.
BAT WALKS : Carry it around, using headphones to listen for bats. The holes at the bottom allow a wristrap to be used to keep it secure. The perfect detector for batwalks, no expertise required, no fiddling with rotary controllers, and no frequency dial to look at - 'eyes to the skies' operation to enjoy the bats.
STATIC DETECTION : Place it outside in the garden, on a window sill or on the roof of a garden shed, use a 10m 3.5mm stereo cable to connect the headphone output to a powered speaker / boom box in the house, and listen to bats hunting and communication all evening long.
Build cost April 2023 : under £15 each 10-off i.e £160 for 10, drops to around £1100 to build 100 i.e £11 per unit
This version features a pair of wristband / lanyard holes at the bottom, under the buttons. Connect a writstrap to this so that you can't drop it when batwalking. Another hole near the top is aligned with one of the Pico's mounting holes, and allows the Pico's green status LED to be seen from the top, through the PCB.
Enjoy!
